Nina and her little things

Ceramist

My name is Nina B., I am a ceramist of Thai origin living in Senegal, where I create functional and decorative ceramics. I started working with clay ten years ago, after facing health issues that forced me to rethink my career path. I have always been drawn to the meditative nature of working with clay, which resonates with my Buddhist beliefs and allows both the creator and the observer to slow down and connect with texture, form, and symmetry. In Senegal, where there are no suppliers, I work exclusively with wild clay, often incorporating natural materials such as ash for glazes. I appreciate the raw texture of clay, mixing traditional techniques with new ideas. My work reflects a fusion of Senegalese influences, my Thai heritage, and my travels. One of my first projects combined the organic shapes of coffee beans with the precision of the Japanese Kumiko technique, which led me to participate in the Off Festival of the Dakar International Contemporary Art Biennale. I am primarily inspired by the beauty and fragility of ecosystems and ancient cultures. My current work reflects these concerns, and I hope to continue using ceramics to explore them in a deeper and more meaningful way.
