Semedo
SEMEDO is a Senegalese painter born in 2002 and based in Dakar. His work is part of an in-depth exploration of identity, collective memory, and the soul of Senegalese society. Inspired by Senegal's cultural richness, SEMEDO draws on scenes from everyday life, ceremonies, spirituality, sports, architecture, and clothing—both traditional and contemporary—which he considers to be true works of art. Through his compositions, he seeks to convey the harmony between tradition and modernity, as well as the pride and dynamism of a constantly evolving society. His artistic practice is based on figurative work characterized by mass treatments, overlapping layers, and color nuances that suggest forms and emotions rather than freezing them in place. This approach allows for a sensitive and expressive reading of his works, leaving room for the viewer's interpretation and feelings. Having participated in several exhibitions, notably at the 2024 Dakar Biennale, SEMEDO affirms a singular and committed vision, where each work becomes a visual testimony, a silent narration of Senegalese identity. His work is both intimate and universal, rooted in his origins while opening up to the world.
